Benefits of Pomegranate Juice

Benefits of pomegranate juice..........

Pomegranates are exotic fruits about the size of an orange that grow on trees native to Western Asia.

Pomegranate juice has strong antioxidant properties. The fruit has a tough peel, and sweet juicy pulp that contains many seeds. Along with olives, figs and grapes, pomegranates are one of the first plants to be cultivated by man.

Benefits of Pomegranate Juice

Pomegranate juice and pomegranate juice concentrate include all of the qualities attributed to antioxidant vitamins. The plant is also a natural astringent that can be used to treat or prevent a range of infections.

Pomegranates have been shown to have more than three times the antioxidant activity of the next most potent fruits (grapes and oranges).

Antioxidants are important substances that counter the harmful effects of free radicals, unstable byproducts of chemical reactions that occur in the body on a daily basis. Left unstable, free radicals can damage and destroy tissue and lead to the development of a variety of diseases, including cancer and heart disease.

Pomegranate juice benefits are substantiated by studies that show a positive effect on arteriosclerosis and cholesterol levels when pomegranate juice is consumed. Pomegranates contain flavonoids, polyphenols and antioxidants that can protect the body from heart disease and stroke by helping to control not only cholesterol levels but also blood pressure and deposits of plaque in the arteries.

Other benefits of pomegranate juice include anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. Pomegranate juice also contains phyto-estrogens, plant hormones that have health benefits similar to soy. In addition, the allergic acid and tannins in pomegranates may protect against free radical damage and destroy toxins that can cause cancer.

A study by the American Urological Association in San Antonio, Texas suggests that men who have had prostate cancer may be able to slow the progression of a recurrence by drinking eight ounces of pomegranate juice per day. According to the study, PSA (prostate specific antigen) levels, a marker for prostate cancer, rose much more slowly in men who drank pomegranate juice daily than in those who did not.
