Complications of Gastric Bypass Surgery

Complications of gastric bypass surgery………………

For many extremely overweight people, diets and exercise do not work. As a last resort, some people turn to gastric-bypass surgery and find that their life-long battle with weight is finally solved. Though there are complications of the surgery for some people, it is often a success for others.

Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric-bypass surgery can not only help extremely overweight people to lose weight, but it can also help correct health problems related to obesity. For example, many obese people also suffer from hypertension, heart problems, diabetes, sleep apnea and other health conditions. In such cases, the weight loss achieved through the surgery can also help to reverse the secondary health problems related to being overweight.

Only a small percentage of people are candidates for gastric-bypass surgery, a procedure which literally involves stapling the stomach to make it smaller so the patient cannot eat as much.

During a gastric-bypass procedure, a small pouch is created in the stomach, and a portion of the small intestine is then attached to this pouch, allowing food to bypass the lower stomach and part of the intestines.

Complications of Gastric Bypass Surgery

Complications of gastric-bypass surgery can include nutritional deficiencies from not eating enough, leaks around the staple line placed in the stomach, and thrombosis. Candidates undergo rigoris screening to be sure that the benefits of surgery will outweigh the risks.

To lower the risk of complications from gastric-bypass surgery, many physicians now use a laporoscopic technique. This technique involves the use of an instrument known as a laproscope, which can be inserted into the stomach through a much smaller incision than would be necessary with traditional surgery. Laproscopic surgery reduces the risk of bleeding and other complications of gastric-bypass surgery, and it is much less painful as well.
