Constipation in Children

Constipation in children is a common problem but usually only a temporary one. It is likely to occur when the child is not getting enough liquids, fiber and/or exercise.

Constipation in Children

It can also be caused when the child does not want to take a break in play or if a parent is absent and they are embarrassed without them nearby.

Children may not want to try to have a bowel movement for fear of pain. A warm bath sometimes relaxes them enough.

An enema might have to be used if the child can’t pass the stool or is too afraid of it hurting.

Take the child to a doctor if there are repeated episodes of constipation over a 2-3 week period or if you notice a tear a rip around the anus.

If the child appears afraid to participate in normal activity or it looks as if there might be a hemorrhoid starting, the child has probably been constipated for awhile.

Constipation Treatment

Eat lots of whole grains, especially brown rice, raw or slightly cooked fruits and vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds. Chew slowly and don’t eat too much at one sitting of anything.

Hot cereals or warm liquids, such as oatmeal or herbal tea, at breakfast can stimulate contractions of the lower intestine. Drink plenty of water to keep stools soft.

Liquids, such as water and fruit juices, add fluid to the colon and bulk to the stools making bowel movements softer and easier to pass.

Supplements are also considered a good treatment. Flaxseed oil lubricates the colon for an easier passage of waste. Milk thistle improves liver function and bile flow.

Dandelion root stimulates bile flow and improves bowel movements. Magnesium improves gut motility and retains water in the colon. Do not use magnesium long term. Aloe vera juice improves bowel movements.

Relieving constipation is a serious problem in adults. It can lead to headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, fatigue, hemorrhoids, hernias, insomnia, varicose veins and weight gain.
