Migraine Headaches

Migraine headaches are just one example of the many different types that people suffer from. They make up approximately 6% of all types of headache pain, but are the most severe.

This is one of the most frequently occurring disorders. They are more prevalent than even the common cold. Headaches are of varying intensity and type and the majority of people will have them off and on for most of their life.

Migraine Headaches

They are intensely painful and are often accompanied by vision difficulties, extreme sensitivity to light, nausea and vomiting. A painful episode can go on for several days and can be incapacitating.

This type of pain is caused by disturbances in the blood flow to the head. Most sufferers get approximately one a month. The pain is severe and is usually on one side of the head.

Cause for Migraine Headaches

Causes of the pain include emotional stress, fatigue, eyestrain, allergies, sinusitis, poor posture and spinal misalignment, especially of the neck and the jaw.

Low blood sugar, hormonal imbalance, constipation, poor digestion and nutritional deficiencies can trigger headache pain also.

Other causes consist of excessive intake or withdrawal from drugs, such as alcohol, caffeine, nicotine or illegal substances.

Treatment for the Pain

Different foods help pain from different causes. Fiber is used to treat headaches that are brought on by constipation of toxic build-up.

To keep your blood sugar level, try to have 5 to 6 small meals a day instead of 3 large meals. Drink a glass of water every 1 to 2 hours to keep the muscles in your neck and head supple and to flush out toxins.

Include sources of both calcium and magnesium to help prevent headache pain. Studies have also shown riboflavin is effective in preventing headaches.

Avoid caffeine, alcohol and sugar products. Do not consume sugary foods. They cause your blood sugar to rise sharply and then crash, often resulting in headache pain.

Stress reduction techniques provide excellent results for certain types of headaches. Meditating, quiet time and easy stretching exercises help the body relax and eases the tension associated with headache pain.
