Vitamin D Deficiency Symptoms Include Muscle Pain and Bone Softening

Vitamin D deficiency symptoms………………….

Vitamin D is called the Sunshine Vitamin because it is manufactured by the body after it is exposed to sunlight.

Vitamin D helps the body build strong and healthy bones and teeth.

Vitamin D Deficiency Symptoms

If you are getting lower amounts of vitamin D than required, you run the risk of bone softening which is known as osteomalacia. (more common in older adults.)

One painful symptom of vitamin D deficiency in children is developing rickets.

If your child gets rickets at a young age, he or she will usually develop bow legs, a protruding stomach and swelling at the ends of some of his or her bones, including enlargement of the head. It might cause your child to walk slowly and feel miserable. (In puberty, your child might develop knock knees instead of bow legs.)

As an adult Vitamin D deficiency symptoms are harder to pinpoint as you might have only vague symptoms such as bone and muscle pain or muscle weakness and tenderness in your thighs.

It is much more common in women who are part of certain religions where they have to remain covered up. (Vitamin D is manufactured by the body when it is exposed to sunlight)

Causes of Vitamin D Deficiency

One cause of having vitamin D deficiency symptoms is that you just may not be taking in enough foods with vitamin D in them. (This is where a multi-vitamin with vitamin D is essential.)

Another cause is that you do not get out into the sun enough for your body to change it into a usable form. Also, if you have fast bone growth when you are young, you could need more vitamin D than you are getting.

You also use more than your regular amount of vitamin D when you are pregnant or when you are breastfeeding. If you have problems with your liver, kidney or bowels you may not be absorbing vitamin D as you should be.

Foods with Vitamin D

Foods with Vitamin D include cod-liver Oil, halibut-liver oil, herring, mackerel, salmon, sardines and tuna.

Commonly recognized sources are milk that is fortified with Vitamin D, as well as cheese, butter, margarine and cream.

Also containing Vitamin D is egg yolks, egg substitutes and small amounts in dark-leafy green vegetables and mushrooms.

Vitamin D deficiency symptoms can be very painful in children and adults. Getting the right amount of sunlight is key.
